DTF PRESS TROUBLESHOOTING GUIDE
Built to Press. Built to Last.
Southern Made Printing
Running DTF transfers shouldn’t feel like guesswork. When something goes wrong—prints not sticking, edges lifting, film fighting the peel—it slows production and wastes shirts. The good news? Most DTF issues come down to a few simple settings.
This guide breaks down the most common DTF problems and how to fix them fast.
❌ Transfer Isn’t Sticking
If your transfer won’t bond to the garment, it’s almost always a press setup issue, not the transfer itself. DTF relies on three critical factors:
✔ Check These First
Temperature
Heat press displays aren’t always accurate. Use a laser thermometer or heat strip to verify the actual platen temperature. Most DTF transfers press best between 275°F–310°F, depending on fabric type.
Pressure
DTF adhesive needs firm, even pressure to properly bond into the fabric. Too light and the adhesive won’t engage. You should feel a solid clamp when the press closes.
Time
A good starting range is 10–15 seconds. Thicker garments or different presses may require slight adjustments.
Best Practice:
Always test on scrap fabric before production. One test press can save an entire order.
❌ Edges Lifting After Pressing
The design looks good at first, then the corners start curling. This usually means the edges didn’t receive enough heat or pressure.
✔ How to Fix It
- Press and peel as normal
- Cover the design with parchment or kraft paper
- Re-press for 5 seconds using firm pressure
This post-press helps fully activate the adhesive along the edges and creates a smoother, longer-lasting finish.
Best Practice:
Inspect corners before packaging. A quick second press prevents reprints and callbacks.
❌ Film Won’t Peel Cleanly
You go to peel and part of the design lifts with the film. Frustrating, but fixable.
✔ What to Try
- If hot peeling causes lift, allow the transfer to cool slightly and peel again
- Increase pressure on the next press to ensure full adhesive activation
- Peel slowly at a low angle—avoid pulling straight up
Best Practice:
Every press setup behaves a little differently. Once you find the right settings, stay consistent.
Final Notes
DTF success comes down to four things:
Heat • Pressure • Time • Peel Technique
Dial those in, and your prints will be clean, durable, and production-ready every time.
